When It Comes To Loose Leaf Tea, It's Buyer Beware

Over-stating cups per ounces (or grams or pounds) can mislead consumers.
RedUmbrella Tea prides itself on cost-competitive prices for ultra high quality tea. A part of making RedUmbrella Tea cost competitive is a constant analysis of market prices vis-a-vis other tea companies sharing the same market space. A general rule for figuring out how competitive we are is to figure "price per cup." Trouble is, most retailers simply overstate and therefore overreach when stating price per cups. When comparing RedUmbrella Tea's price on 8 ounces (250 grams, or 0.5 lb) to what other retailers are publishing, RedUmbrella Tea discovered a potential pitfall for tea consumers.

Consider. Whereas RedUmbrella Tea will underestimate how many cups of tea are in 8 ounces (80+) other retailers are claiming that consumers can get 120 cups. That is a 40 cup delta. What gives?

Here is what co-Founder and Chief Indulger of RedUmbrella Tea, E. Joy Oostendarp, recently stated on this subject: "That [120 cups] is the absolute max someone would get if they used a level teaspoon for each cup of tea. Since everyone's taste is different, most will not get that number of cups."

Translation: Listed price per cup will not necessarily match actual pocket price!

We here at RedUmbrella Tea prefer to underestimate and over-deliver. We hope you will feel the same way too. (For more, please see our articles What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get Promise and Why We Price In Cups, Not Ounces, Grams or Pounds.)

How can you know for sure what you're paying per cup? Only by measuring yourself. That is why we prefer to underestimate. We only want you to be pleasantly surprised!

In the end, though, buyer beware. What you see is not necessarily what you are going to get (or pay!).
